Nexterday is an album released by former lead singer and songwriter of the Cars, Ric Ocasek. The album boasts a more DIY sound than previous albums, having been partially recorded in Ocasek's home studio with Ocasek playing many of the instruments himself. Musicians featured in his 1982 debut solo album, Beatitude were used on Nexterday, including fellow Cars keyboardist Greg Hawkes, bassist Darryl Jenifer of Bad Brains, drummer/programmer Stephen George and guitarist Roger Greenawalt

Last time around, Ric Ocasek went for a big sound in an attempt at a big comeback, enlisting Smashing Pumpkin Billy Corgan as a co-producer for about half the album and using such alt-rock luminaries as Bad Religion guitarist Brian Baker and Hole/Smashing Pumpkin alumna Melissa Auf der Maur as bassist. The record may have worked but it wasn't a hit, and Ocasek retreated back to his lucrative career as a producer, taking a full eight years to deliver his next solo album, 2005's Nexterday.

Ric Ocasek has been changing the face of pop music for nearly 30 years. His incredible musical odyssey began in the late ’60s and includes opening shows for the MC5 and the Stooges, producing some of the most seminal artists of our time (including Weezer, No Doubt and Le Tigre) not to mention a decade-long stint leading The Cars, whose never-ending string of platinum albums and Top 40 hits helped define the. post-punk and new wave eras, selling over 25 million albums and creating a blueprint for many of today’s most popular bands. Now Ric is preparing to influence a whole new generation. I believe he was originally going to release "Nexterday" on that label. Things must have fallen apart, and Ric quit the label and took his album to Sanctuary for distribution and release.

In an aught-nickel chock with e-goods, Ric Ocasek is the rare once-was not angling for such faint kudos. Nope, the erstwhile Cars front-skinny-man opts with Nexterday for overlookable adult-pop sophistication, a humble homemade comedown from its Billy Corgan-produced 1997 predecessor, heavy near-miss Troublizing. A record for the pre-converted, Mr. Porizkova's latest aims not to wow or to woo but to waft, stripped down, in the conditioned chill of compact guitar squiggles, reverby vox, fastidious drum machines, and pleasant-enough platitudes. The for-the-fans approach.
