Thoroughly Modern Millie is a 1967 American musical-romantic comedy film directed by George Roy Hill and starring Julie Andrews. The screenplay by Richard Morris, focuses on a naive young woman who finds herself in the midst of a series of madcap adventures when she sets her sights on marrying her wealthy boss.
Thoroughly Modern Millie. For Julie Andrews' third movie musical, following the wildly successful Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music, film producer Ross Hunter apparently tried and failed to get the rights to The Boyfriend, the faux-1920s musical in which Andrews had made her American theatrical debut.
Thoroughly Modern Millie was the first musical Julie Andrews made after The Sound Of Music. As well as starring in the lead female role, she sang the title song, which is arguably the best song on the soundtrack of this light-hearted romp through the Roaring Twenties. With music by Jimmy Van Heusen and lyrics by Sammy Cahn, the 1920s jazz band melody and superb internal rhymes capture the Zeitgeist of New York during the Prohibition era better than any old time gangster film. More songs from Julie Andrews.
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE was producer Ross Hunter's attempt to re-create THE BOY FRIEND, in which Julie Andrews had starred on Broadway. MGM held the movie rights to BOY FRIEND and would not sell them to Universal. Eventually MGM would turn THE BOY FRIEND into a rather-misguided film starring Christopher Gable and Twiggy. The story of THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE concerns one Millie Dillmount (Julie Andrews), a simple girl from the country who comes to the Big Smoke looking for love, excitement and most importantly, Mr Right. Along the way Millie meets up with demure Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler.
Thoroughly Modern Millie (Original Sound Track) (LP, Album).
With Julie Andrews, James Fox, Mary Tyler Moore, Carol Channing. Millie comes to town in the roaring twenties to encounter flappers, sexuality and white slavers. During the "Babyface" dance, Millie loads paper into the type writer with a couple of inches sticking above the roller. When it switches to showing the typewriter from her perspective as she types, the paper is gone. When it switches back to the wide shot, the paper has returned. Jimmy Smith: Does he have a pet name for you? Millie Dillmount: Yes! John! Jimmy Smith: John? Millie Dillmount: John. Jimmy Smith: John, that's not very romantic. Millie Dillmount: No, but it's modern.
