Cheryl Studer was born in Midland, Michigan. At a very young age, she began studying the piano and the viola. At the age of twelve, after listening to the album La Callas à Paris, she decided that she wanted to be an opera singer and started voice lessons in her hometown with Mrs. Gwendolyn Pike . Cheryl Studer was born in Midland, Michigan. She spent her senior high school years at Interlochen Arts Academy, before studying for one year at Oberlin Conservatory, near Cleveland, Ohio.
The Queen of the Night is a high octane role in Die Zauberflote, which Mozart wrote for his sister-in-law. She must have been some singer! Diana Damrau here makes a really terrifying Queen in her second aria. No question that these are both wonderful pieces of singing, but count me with those who prefer a bigger sound, a more dramatioc KdN, like Moser and Deutekom. The overall winner for me is Cheryl Studer, with Lucia Popp a very close second. I also like Sutherland and Streich.
In the summer of 1979, Studer attended a course for foreign students on the art of the German Lied at the Schubert Institute in Baden bei Wien, Austria. In this program, Studer's teachers included Irmgard Seefried, Brigitte Fassbaender, and Hans Hotter. Hotter convinced Studer to remain in Europe to study further with him at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst, Vienna. In 1990, Studer returned to the Metropolitan Opera to sing the role of Donna Anna in Mozart's Don Giovanni. That same year, Studer sang the role of Elsa in Richard Wagner's Lohengrin at the Vienna State Opera. In 1991, Studer performed two more roles at the Met, Elettra in Mozart's Idomeneo and Violetta in Verdi's La traviata.
Mozart, lovely, lovely Mozart. One of the better operas, though not the exact version I would have wanted. It is lovely to hear Te Kanawa (my wife spent part of a morning, once, talking with Kiri not knowing whom she wa. Happy to have this as part of my collection, and I'm not an opera buff.
