Bruce Springsteen's seminal album, "Born in the USA," marks its 35th anniversary this year. Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA wasn’t just a chart-topping album. It was a phenomenon felt all the way up in the highest office in the land. Dancing in the Dark’ was inspired by Michael Jackson. Even though Springsteen amassed about 70 songs during the Born in the USA sessions, manager Landau still felt the album was missing a surefire hit. Michael Jackson on a subway in the mid-’80s. That evening I wrote ‘Dancing in the Dark,’ my song about my own alienation.
The Boss pinched the title of an old crooners’ standard to write his own classic, the finest single from his massive Born in the USA album in 1984. Bursting with ambition, frustration and sex, Dancing in the Dark is also Springsteen’s dance-floor peak, with a typically stunning sax solo by the late Clarence Clemons to top it all off. And there aren’t many songs from the era that come with an important warning about fire safety in the chorus.
In late August 1984, the Born in the . album was selling very well, its songs were frequently aired on radio stations, and the associated tour was drawing considerable press. thus attracted even more media attention, in particular from CBS Evening News correspondent Bernard Goldberg, who saw Springsteen as a modern-day Horatio Alger story. When I hear those notes and that drumbeat, and the Boss' best arena-stentorian, shout-groan vocals come over the speakers, I feel like I'm hearing the national anthem. peaked at on the Billboard Hot 100 singles charts in late 1984.
