Windsor Davies & Don Estelle – Whispering Grass, I Should Have Known. Windsor Davies As . Williams And Don Estelle As Gunner Sugden (Lofty) - Whispering Grass (7", Single).
Windsor Davies pictured with his wife Lynne who died just four months ago. The family show ran for 56 episodes between 1974 and 1981 and was set in Burma at the end of the Second World War. His hard-nosed character was best known for the phrase "Oh dear, how sad, never mind" whenever somebody else had problems. The father-of-five died peacefully on Thursday, his family said. His daughter Jane Davies said her parents left a large family "who will all remember them with love, laughter and gratitude". He also enjoyed a number one hit in 1975 with co-star Don Estelle (Gunner "Lofty" Sugden) when they recorded a version of Whispering Grass - selling more than one million copies. Apart from the brilliance of the writing, I think It Ain't Half Hot Mum was brilliant because that is how it really was," he told BBC Wales in 2012.
In 1975, Don Estelle and Windsor Davies, in character as "Lofty" and Sergeant Major Williams, released "Whispering Grass" and this became a hit, reaching number 1 on the UK Singles Chart and stayed at the top spot for three weeks. The main characters include Gunner "Lofty" Sugden, a short, fat soldier who wears a pith helmet and possesses an incredible singing voice; Gunner "Parky" Parkin, a young recruit who, though eager, is slightly bumbling and has very little aptitude for the theatre; Gunner ski" Graham, a bald-headed and intelligent Oxbridge graduate who plays the piano; Gunner "Atlas" Mackintosh, a.
There was Gunner ‘Lofty’ Sugden, played by Don Estelle, who stood 4ft 9in in his socks and had the voice of a choirboy. There was university educated ‘Mr Lah-di-Dah’ Gunner Graham (John Clegg), always correcting the sergeant-major’s grammar. Windsor Davies (pictured on set in 1976) played Sergeant Major Williams in It Ain't Half Hot Mum, and died last week at the age of 88. The London-born Welsh actor went on to have a number one hit with the novelty track Whispering Grass with his sitcom co-star Don Estelle. And creators of the scabrous cartoon Family Guy said at the weekend they will ‘phase out’ jokes about gays and lesbians. Such is the nature of the present age that equal opportunities are upheld in everything but comedy.
Whispering Grass (1975), taken from an album recorded by the cast, became a number 1 hit and one of the most memorable novelty singles of all time. Sing, Lofty! implored Davies, before Estelle put on his best crooning voice for the slightly satirical version of a 1950 song previously performed by the American doo-wop vocal group The Ink Spots. The pair recorded several more singles and a Top 10 album, Sing Lofty (1976), as well as appearing in television commercials and a film version of the stage farce Not Now, Comrade (1976).
Estelle and Windsor went on to make the album Sing Lofty, which reached the top 10 and sold 80,000 copies, before being re-released to sell another 250,000 copies, making it one of EMI's top 20 bestselling albums.
