The Pretty Things is the self-titled 1965 release by the English rock band The Pretty Things, which features mostly R&B and rock and roll cover versions. A re-issue released in 2000 on CD featured every track from both the American and British versions of the album. The liner notes were written by Jimmy Duncan and Bryan Morrison. Phil May, lead vocals. Dick Taylor, lead guitar. Brian Pendleton, rhythm guitar, backing vocals. John Stax, bass guitar, harmonica, backing vocals.

The Pretty Things' debut LP was a legendary exercise in anarchy - 30 minutes into the two days' worth of sessions, their original producer, Jack Baverstock (the head of the label, no less), walked out, and was eventually replaced by a slightly more sympathetic personality in the hopes of salvaging something from the efforts of the band, who, whatever their genteel. The Pretty Things is recorded with practically every song and instrument pushing the needle into the red (.

The Pretty Things are a 1960s and 1970s rock and roll band from London. They pioneered a raw approach to rhythm and blues (and later, psychedelia) that influenced a number of key bands of the 1960s British invasion, particularly The Rolling Stones, and David Bowie whose first hero was Phil May. Pretty Things was preceded by Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys which consisted of Dick Taylor, fellow Sidcup Art College student Keith Richards and Mick Jagger.

The Pretty Things were signed to the Fontana record label and their last album with that label, Emotions, left a sour taste in their mouths. The label forced a producer and orchestral arrangements on them that took the album into territories far from what they had in mind. I personally think some of the songs on that album benefit nicely from these orchestrations, as in The Sun, but Singer Phil May told Louder Than War: I couldn’t believe what they were doing. We were hi-jacked basically. It was time to get out and unless we finished that album, we wouldn’t have been free.
