HRKY was born in Fukuoka. A lot of domestic and foreign underground techno artists held DJ gigs in Fukuoka in the 90′s. Around the same time, techno independent labels also appeared in Fukuoka. The scene in Fukuoka at this time influenced HRKY and he regularly organized parties from 1995. And he started composing his own music in 1996. HRKY is making dance music still somewhere in Fukuoka. The South Florida rapper opens up on anxiety, moving back home and love songs.
Five kicks off to superbly infectious first single/video California Dreaming. Leaning heavier towards Rock, there is a kind of Prog Rock intro that barrels the band into delightfully catchy, anthemic choruses that proclaim: I’m no shooting star, Just a burning heart, We never sleep, In California, we’re dreaming.
The most immediately noticeable improvements on Five Five are Pouya’s beat selection and ability to craft catchy and memorable choruses. While Underground Underdog (2016) was plagued with sloppy and inconsistent choruses and instrumentals, Five Five has a much more focused and refined take on both of those issues. Since my initial listening of this project I have been unable to remove the hook from Void or the refrain of one time for my bitches/ two times for my guys/ three times for my four-five, got to keep that on my side on One time.
