Description

Daniel Barenboim in his double role of director and pianist have achieved a very significant place in the most different musical stages.

Most complete cycles of symphonies present their difficulties. Most have a red headed step child. Even the most famous cycles, Karajan's first DG Beethoven set (still on sale by DG), has its spoilt kid, the Pastoral.

Christine Mallinson, P.

The volcanic outpourings of feeling are as intense as they should be, yet in the quieter moments – especially in the central ‘Scene in the Country’ – Davis achieves a wonderfully expressive pianissimo, in which every detail seems to convey meaning, all caught splendidly by the live recording.
