This should have been to no one's surprise who knew his love for this music (and his past experience playing in this genre), especially those who dug the rock tracks on the previous year's Everything Is Wrong, such as "What Love" and "All That I Need Is to Be Loved

Animal Rights" is an album by Moby, released on September 23, 1996 (see 1996 in music). The album was poorly received upon its first release. Moby had earlier made his reputation with techno music, but "Animal Rights" found him embracing punk rock and ambient music. The album's liner notes contain various pictures (the cover photographs features Moby at two weeks old, being held by his grandfather), an essay on the course of basic rights over history, an essay outlining Moby's disregard for the Christian Coalition, and a page with various "last minute maxims," such as "cruelty is unacceptable" and "you can't expect people

As for Animal Rights, despite its commercial fate, it's an album that demands to be heard at least twice before deciding it's not for you. The first time, of course, is for Moby, because he asked you nicely, and the second time is for yourself, during which time you just need to remember one thing: it's perfectly fine if it's not to your tastes, but the fact that it's unlike anything else in Moby's solo catalog doesn't make it a bad album.

Like Everything Is Wrong, Animal Rights goes from one extreme to the next, swinging from contemplative, classical prettiness to screaming-guitar mayhem. But this time out, there’s less fun in between those two poles. Moby strays even further from his celebratory rave roots and pummels us with a sonic depiction of our apocalyptic society.

Animal Rights is the fourth studio album by American musician Moby, released on September 23, 1996. 1996 studio album by Moby.

It should be noted that the sticker announced "includes Alone" while this track does not appear on the release.

Excellent production, both discs are very good, the first disc offers catchy songs that will remain in your mind for days, nice to sing along. The second disc offers ambient, melancholic and somehow dark musics, very relaxing.

To my ears , this is a very special album !!! It's so lovely Moby grunging that way , shouting n' spitting menace ... "Soft" , "Face it" , "That's when I reach for my revolver" , my favourites , as a whole , the album is slightly uneven , but nothing is perfect in this world really !!! The icing of the cake is the ltd second disc , "Little Idiot" , it's there where Moby unfolds his talent , so serene and riveting , I still go back to it quite often , magic !!!!!!!!

Moby scared the crap out of everybody in 1996/97 when his music took a hard left turn away from the electronic dance elements that everyone had grown to expect and into straight-up hardcore/punk/rock territory. This should have been to no one's surprise who knew his love for this music (and his past experience playing in this genre), especially those who dug the rock tracks on the previous year's Everything Is Wrong, such as "What Love" and "All That I Need Is to Be Loved." Animal Rights is anchored by a slightly de-fanged Mission of Burma cover ("That's When I Reach for My Revolver") and the nearly-industrial "Come On Baby," but these singles failed to help Moby find the mainstream rock audience that he thought might catapult him into the big leagues. Instead what we really get here is a better understanding of Moby as an artist, who demonstrates that even a person with big spirituality and a simple, zen-like approach to living is capable of great rage from time to time. Confounded by the release, his American label reworked the album to balance the rock tracks with three ambient passages from the UK bonus disc of the album plus a ten-minute meditative piece ("Alone") that was otherwise lost on a recent B-side. This new belated permutation of the album only confused the market further and dilutes the experience into a messy album of extremes. Moby would go on to find his superstar formula with his next major release, and he never again retreated back into anything resembling this sound... which is a bit of a shame, since he built his career upon versatility and unpredictability. His hunger for success might have led him down some heavily criticized avenues, no more so than this one, but even experiments that are perceived as failures are more rewarding to the listener than extended complacency.

One of the best guitar albums ever.

It's not rock. It's not punk. Only commercial!

WTF ????? Where exactly did you hear the "only commercial" thing ????????????
