American VI: Ain't No Grave is an album by Johnny Cash released posthumously on February 23, 2010 on American Recordings and Lost Highway Records. Its release was three days prior to the 78th anniversary of Cash's birth. The album's music was recorded during the same sessions as American V: A Hundred Highways (2006) which took place during the final months of Cash's life. The album debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 54,000 copies in its first week.
Ain't no grave Can hold my body down There ain't no grave Can hold my body down. Well, look down yonder, Gabriel Put your feet on the land and sea But Gabriel, don't you blow your trumpet Until you hear from me. There ain't no grave Can hold my body down Ain't no grave Can hold my body down. Well meet me, Jesus, meet me Meet me in the middle of the air And if these wings don't fail me I will meet you anywhere. Ain't no grave Can hold my body down There ain't no grave Can hold my body down. This song is from Cash’s last album, American Recordings VI. This album was released seven years after his death. The album, but specifically this song gives the feeling of Cash singing from the grave. Through the use of his lyrics and the chains in the music, the song has a haunting feel.
Johnny Cash’s American Recordings albums, recorded during the last decade of his life, carefully stewarded by Rick Rubin, are a monumental accomplishment – monumental enough, indeed, to stand as the monument that their incalculably influential creator deserves. American VI - Ain't No Grave" is Johnny's final studio album and the last in the Rick Rubin series that began, to great acclaim, in 1994 with American Recordings The tracks were recorded in 2004 during the same sessions that produced American V: A Hundred Highways. It was during these sessions that his wife, June Carter Cash, died.
These ten songs were cut during the same sessions for American V: A Hundred Highways. Guitarists Mike Campbell, Matt Sweeney, Smokey Hormel, and Benmont Tench on keyboards were present, as were other musicians. If there were any justice, Ain't No Grave would be the last album released under Cash’s name. It is not only a compelling contribution to his legacy, but an offering that closes the historic American Recordings series with the same stamp of quality that began it. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music.
