Esham Attica Smith (born September 20, 1973), better known by his stage name Esham, is an American rapper from Detroit, Michigan. Emerging as one of the first ever hip-hop artists from Detroit, Esham released his debut studio album, Boomin' Words from Hell in 1989 at the age of 16. Since then, he has gone on to release 15 studio albums in total, and also formed the hip hop/horrorcore group Natas in 1992
Boomin' Words from Hell is the debut album of Esham. It was first released in 1989, and was reissued the following year.
Released when Esham was still a 16-year-old student at Detroit’s Osborn High School, Boomin’ Words from Hell is one of rap music’s most audacious debuts. Written, produced, and performed entirely by Esham (real name: Rashaam Attica Smith), the album is a stunning fusion of biting New York street hip-hop and the rapper’s self-styled acid rap. The lyrical content presents a vision of inner-city Detroit that is as detailed as it is harrowing.
Within a year, Esham and his older brother James H. Smith had formed their record label Reel Life Productions and extra pressings of this album were manufactured. The 2nd pressing was still a red tape limited to 500 copies but it now contained a bar code and the catalog number RLP1000. The 3rd pressing was a clear tape. Later again in 1990 it was re-released under a new catalog number (RLP1001) with new cover art, a modified track list, and a slightly different title, simply Boomin' Words From Hell. Esham's Boomin' "Words From Hell" Q&A.
It's a rather primitive album, composed with nothing more than a bass guitar, drum machine, sampler, mic, and tiny budget, yet it transcends its lo-fi trappings with its unique character.
