TAAB2 does not come close to that masterpiece, and is not one long track like it's predecessor. Hell, it's not even technically Jethro Tull (Martin Barre does not appear on this album !?!). But at age 65, Ian Anderson, at the urging of Derek Shulman (yes, that guy), has revisited the character of Gerald Bostock (the child who supposedly wrote the words for TAAB), and created this album. There are more prog rock elements to this album than anything Anderson has recorded since the eighties. Overall this concept album is a comparable sequel to "TAAB" and although is no masterpiece, it is not disappointing. If you compare it to the classic Tull years naturally it will not measure up but I think taken on its own merits the album delivers and a considerable effort has been put into this. It is this effort and songwriting skill that lifts "TAAB2" above the usual Anderson output of recent years.

Sensibly titled Thick as a Brick 2, this 2012 set brings us up to speed with the life of Gerald Bostock, who was a mere lad of 10 at the time of TAAB but is now an adult shouldering a myriad of responsibilities. His disappointments and mild triumphs make him a different man than he was, yet underneath it all he's still that recognizable child, and the same can be said for Anderson's music: it's cleaner and streamlined, not as indulgent or idealistic as his younger work, boasting a more sensible structure, yet it still bears all of his signatures from the flute.
Smartly, Ian Anderson has not tried to imitate past achievements, and instead presents a work worthy of consideration on its own merits. TAAB2 asks the deceptively complex question – whatever happened to Gerald Bostock? It isn’t as clear-cut as you might think. The poetic ‘Might Have Beens’ establishes the concept in Anderson’s inimitably verbose style, positing any number of possible futures for his fictional protagonist. TAAB2 will underwhelm those expecting a retread of hallowed ground. These might be the very same naysayers that believed the concept album was dead. For those willing to embrace the intelligence and craftsmanship on offer here, Ian Anderson proves that conceptual rock is very much alive, and that no one does it better than the old guard. Thick As A Brick 2 is released March 30th.
