Amiable California indie trio Night School make their debut with Blush, a woozy ten-song effort that merges '60s girl group innocence with lush dreamy textures. While they're far from the first group to mine the influence of the Shirelles and Shangri-Las, they do so with more sweetness than spunk, updating their tales of heartbreak and woe with '90s fuzz pop tones and a bit of 4AD swirl. Formed in 2013 by Alexandra Morte and Baylie Arin, the nascent duo soon found a home with Georgia-based Graveface Records, which issued Night School's first EP, Heart Beat, in late 2014

2016 release by the alt-rock trio. Blush draws on influences such as 90s era Weezer and the Beach Boys. The record features fuzzy guitars and twinkly leads paired with soft, reverb-heavy vocals and complex harmonies. Night School was formed through a friendship bond over sharing oranges at the park. Alexandra Morte and Baylie Arin met in the spring of 2013 through mutual friends and very shortly after began working on music together.

Night School is a fascinating niche to me; indie rock with a sixties girl group influence, like Professor Utonium made Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup by accidentally spilling in Chemical Go-Go’s. Opener These Times is a perfect example with pitch perfect pop vocals riding a fuzz-soaked guitar crunch. In for a penny, in for a pound, because this song is indicative of all that’s ahead. There is very little to distinguish the ten songs from each other, which made the album melt into a blur of sameness. Blush is the first full-length album from this northern California three piece, three gals who are still in college, a reason to dig them that much more. This is an ideal summer listen: infectious songs full of warm sunshine, brilliant rainbows, and some well-placed lightning and thunder.
