The Rubinstein Piano Concerto is classic romantic fare. What lacks in creativity or emotional depth, is made up by virtuoso showcasing in the outer movements, as is to be expected, in the closing Allegro. Kabalevsky is a very logical coupling. More complex and emotionally involving than Rubinstein's it is nonetheless a reactionary work. Composed in 1952, at the time when Ligeti was writing his Musica Ricercata, sounds like something Tchaikovsky may have written a century earlier

Digital Booklet: Kabalevsky: Piano Concerto No. The Third Concerto, subtitled 'Dedicated to Soviet Youth', appeared in 1952 with the fifteen-year-old Vladimir Ashkenazy as soloist. It is optimistic and sassy, clearly having been influenced to some degree by the cheeky music of members of Les Six. It quotes folk songs in all three movements. Rimsky's piano concerto has never achieved the popularity accorded Capriccio Espagnole, Russian Easter Overture or Scheherazade. But it is an attractive, if somewhat odd, piece. It is rhapsodical in form, with elements of a ; Rimsky makes use of a folksong, 'Gather, brothers'.
