Piano – Dick Hyman, Roger Kellaway. Recorded in the summer of 1981 at Michael's Pub in Manhattan.

In 1970 Kellaway formed the Roger Kellaway Cello Quartet with cellist Edgar Lustgarden, bassist Chuck Domanico and percussionist Emil Richards. The group's piece "Come to the Meadow" was used as the theme for the NPR program Selected Shorts. Featured also is guitarist Jay Berliner, who played on the album. Kellaway received an Oscar nomination for Best Adaptation Score for the film A Star Is Born (1976), and a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement for the Eddie Daniels album Memos from Paradise (1988). Kellaway was featured on Ilya Serov's original rendition of Django Reinhardt's song "Swing 42" in 2017. Live at Michael's Pub. Jazz Mania. Duo, with Dick Hyman (piano); in concert. As It Happened, Vol. 1.

During the two live concerts heard on this CD, Hyman and Kellaway play piano duet versions of four jazz standards plus Kellaway's theme from All in the Family ("Remembering You"), the "Woody Woodpecker Song" and "Chopsticks. Their treatments of these songs are quite adventurous with plenty of emotional and atonal outbursts while always keeping the melody in clear sight.

The Jazz Bakery's continuing series of two-piano, live recording sessions has come up with a winner this week. Pianists Dick Hyman and Roger Kellaway may not seem, on the face of it, to have particularly compatible styles. Hyman, 72, is an eclectic stylist with particularly strong skills in swing and stride music. Kellaway, 60, comes straight out of the postwar bop tradition. Both, however, are talented and versatile composer-arrangers.

Dick Hyman (Eugene, Oregon, 2005). Background information. Some elements from the track "The Moog And Me" (most notably the whistle that serves as the song's lead-in) on the same album were sampled by Beck for the track "Sissyneck" on his 1996 album Odelay. Selected Discography. 1981 - Live At Michael's Pub (JazzMania) with Roger Kellaway. 1983 - Kitten on the Keys: The Piano Music of Zez Confrey (RCA Records). 1988 - 14 Piano Favourites (Music & Arts).

Richard "Dick" Hyman (born March 8, 1927) is an American jazz pianist and composer. Over a 60-year career, he has functioned as a pianist, organist, arranger, music director, and, increasingly, as a composer  . 1983 - Kitten on the Keys: The Piano Music of Zez Confrey (RCA).

Pianist Roger Kellaway can swing hard and has played with everyone from Sonny Rollins to Joni Mitchell. His knowledge of music is encyclopedic and his pianism is instantly recognizable for its airy, sparkling quality, flowing from a singular skill he has to incorporate stride, swing, boogie and more into something totally modern. Long an in-demand sideman, Kellaway has too rarely recorded fronting his own group. Which brings us to the happy occasion of this live 2006 Jazz Standard set with his "East Coast group" (he also maintains a "West Coast group")

Dick Hyman and Roger Kellaway, two pianists who are playing their fourth Michael's Pub engagement together, are musicians so thoroughly in tune with one another's musical thinking that there are moments in their dual performances when the inspiration seems to flow from a single mind. In their current three-week engagement, the emphasis is on ''honky tonk'' piano stylings. This means not only the spirited stride piano we tend to associate with the term honky tonk but also an eclectic playfulness that encompasses everything from Gershwin to Michael Jackson.
