The Very Best's debut album finds Malawian singer Esau Mwamwaya and London-based production duo Radioclit (Etienne Tron and Johan Karlberg) more than making good on the promise of the internet mixtape that introduced their partnership to the world.

Of course, this landmark 1986 album had significantly different cultural baggage in mid-80s Britain than it does now, across the pond. At home it was sneered at for being coffee-table fare falling between two stools, with people perhaps more interested in what they perceived to be cultural tourism in apartheid-divided South Africa, and whether Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the Mbaqanga musicians on the disc were receiving the same rate of pay as their white peers. Interestingly this influence has now spread across the Atlantic to Europe, and it is audible on The Very Best’s debut album, Warm Heart of Africa – albeit in a very different manner.

The Very Best produced their first full-length album, Warm Heart of Africa, released digitally in August 2009 and released physically in October 2009 by GREEN OWL and Moshi Moshi. The album features collaborations with Ezra Koenig and . The title track from the album, "Warm Heart of Africa," won the World Beat Song award at the 9th Annual Independent Music Awards; the track includes a sample of the famous 1966 song by Victor Uwaifo, Guitar Boy. The Very Best is also featured on a track on Crookers' debut album, Tons of Friends.

The Very Best putting out "Warm Heart of Africa," with guest vocals by Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, as the first single off their album is a great bait-and-switch: goofy, chunky radio pop where the rest of the album is majestic and humid electronic anthemics. The b-side of the single, "Yalira," also from the album, is a lot more representative, so hopefully people like it as much as they seem to like the Koenig joint, because this album is the reason we put The Very Best on the cover 19 months ago, before they were even called The Very Best.
