Hello, I'm Johnny Cash is the 33rd album by American country singer Johnny Cash, released on Columbia Records in 1970 (see 1970 in music). If I Were a Carpenter", a famous duet with Cash's wife, June Carter Cash, earned the couple a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1971 (see Grammy Awards of 1971); the song also reached No. 2 on the Country charts.

The first three discs feature outtakes and alternate versions of songs recorded for American Recordings, American II: Unchained, American III: Solitary Man and American IV: The Man Comes Around.

Hurt" was written by Trent Reznor and first released on Nine Inch Nails' 1994 album The Downward Spiral. Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" was released on his 2002 album, American IV: The Man Comes Around. The line "crown of shit" was changed to "crown of thorns", not only removing profanity from the lyrics, but also more directly referencing Christ.
Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, ‘The Dylan/Cash Sessions’ (1969). Dylan and Cash had been circling each other for the better part of a decade before finally joining forces in the studio. The Man In Black had made the first move, writing the young troubadour a fan letter shortly after Dylan came on the scene in 1962. Neil Young's personal life was in free fall by 1974. His wife, actress Carrie Snodgrass, was gone for good, and attempts to rekindle a working relationship with CSNY only resulted in the aborted Human Highway project and the goodwill-shattering "Doom Tour. It was during this turbulent time that he composed songs for a new record, Homegrown. I'm doing a straight-ahead make-out party album. Wryly titled Love Man, the songs were unabashed attempts to woo his wife as well as his fans.
Johnny Cash – Hurt Lyrics. from album: American IV: The Man Comes Around (2002). I hurt myself today To see if I still feel I focus on the pain The only thing that's real The needle tears a hole The old familiar sting Try to kill it all away But I remember everything. What have I become My sweetest friend Everyone I know goes away In the end And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt
Johnny and I would make collections of songs as possible covers for him to sing, and we’d send them to each other. Hurt was one that I sent. There were maybe 20 songs including that one on the mix I made, and it wasn’t one that he responded to. But I had a strong feeling about it, so on the next compilation, I included that one again. Because of the way the Nine Inch Nails song sounds, I think it was hard for him to hear it. So I sent him the lyrics, and I said, Just read the lyrics. It’s a really beautiful piece of art and I’m proud of him for letting people see it. When his management first saw they were like, Nobody can ever see this. And it was really Rosanne, his daughter, that made the case to Johnny that, You’re an artist - this is what you do, and you have to show this.

I hurt myself today To see if I still feel I focus on the pain The only thing that's real. The needle tears a hole The old familiar sting Try to kill it all away But I remember everything. What have I become? My sweetest friend Everyone I know goes away In the end. And you could have it all My empire of dirt I wear this crown of thorns Upon my liar's chair Full of broken thoughts I cannot repair. Beneath the stains of time The feelings disappear You are someone else I am still right here.
