Description

Label: Dum Records ‎– DUM-101. Before Gloom, Kim Rapatti had explored the mechanics of techno with varying success, perfecting his take on the genre with the Instruments series. Gloom, in contrast, marks a departure from convention into mood expression using the tools at his disposal; there are echoes of Detroit techno, New York house, Erkki Kurenniemi, Rune Lindblad, the hum of electricity and old oscillators in this highy personal (and Finnish) work.

Though a few tracks never really break out of their ntal mold, Gloom is an often fascinating listen, caught in the verge between academic '70s electronics and bare '90s acid techno.

From the credo of I Believe to the transcendental The Place and delicate musings of Fade Away and Wish, this remains, in my opinion, an essential contribution to 90s electronics.
