John Brack & Jeff Turner - Topic.

John Brack (10 May 1920 – 11 February 1999) was an Australian painter, and a member of the Antipodeans group. According to one critic, Brack's early works captured the idiosyncrasies of their time "more powerfully and succinctly than any Australian artist before or since. Brack forged the iconography of a decade on canvas as sharply as Barry Humphries did on stage.

His was an art of ideas that aimed to speak directly to the viewer.

After leaving school at sixteen, Brack worked as an insurance clerk in Melbourne when he was prompted to study art after seeing reproductions of work by Vincent van Gogh.

John Brack – Collins St. 5. John Brack was a distinct artist in every sense of the word. Even though Brack was staying put in Melbourne when many other young artists and intellectuals widely visited Europe, his paintings were all but deprived of European influence.

John Brack was one of Australia's most outstanding artists, was born in Melbourne in 1920, and his work first achieved prominence in the 1950s. It's the early 1960's and John Brack, head of painting oat the National Gallery School, has finished for the day. So he buttons his jacket, furls his umbrella and wanders down Swanston Street past Foy and Gibson department store, past the town hall, towards Flinders Street station. But before catching his train out to suburban Surrey Hills, Brack stops in at the Cathedral Hotel in Flinders Lane. Gallery gossip, poetry, the latest crime novel he's read.
