Scottish synth pop trio CHVRCHES might have some really hot singles, but the rest of their debut album is a little hit or miss for me. What did you think of this album?
The Bones of What You Believe is the debut studio album by Scottish synth-pop band Chvrches, released on 20 September 2013 by Virgin Records and Goodbye Records. Recorded between 2011 and 2013 in Glasgow, the album was written, composed, and produced by the band as a collaborative effort.

To say this album has an ’80s feel would be like saying the Glastonbury Festival is quite well known: you can hear a semblance of Human League, an echo of Pet Shop Boys and even a smidgen of early Madonna all fizzing around in the circuitry. The poppiness of The Bone. ill appeal to many, but Chvrches’ more modern leanings keep them on the edgy side. Best of all, they sound like they have the potential to refine this sound and make it even greater.

CHVRCHES carves their niche among this pantheon with the undeniably catchy and cleverly-programmed Bones of What You Believe. I'd like to hear them try a bit more harmonizing or alternating the vocal patterns - the few bits that experiment with this approach leave me hungry for more.
Taken as an album, though, they reveal a band not nearly as arty or aloof as seemingly like-minded contemporaries such as Grimes or Purity Ring; with their ready hooks and fondness for grand gestures, Chvrches are more likely to tour with Paramore than Factory Floor. As their early EPs hinted, a large part of their appeal comes from Lauren Mayberry's voice.

CHVRCHES' debut album sounds enormous, in the best way possible. The hooks here are massive and irresistible; the production is maximalist, overwhelming only insofar as that's the point. Their biggest strength is undoubtedly (in my opinion) Lauren Mayberry's way with a pop melody, but twelve straightforward pop bangers would get exhausting, and their experiments, while not universally successful, keep interest level at a high.
