DJs DJ Sharkey and Hixxy were signed by React and the pair released "Bonkers", the first in a series of albums which has become the best-selling hardcore compilation series of all time. The series is on its nineteenth release as of 11 May 2009, with Bonkers: The Original Hardcore.
Downwards staple Anthony Child, better known as Surgeon, does make an appearance, but it's an uncharacteristic chunk of electronic experimentation called "Over Napoli," which was originally released on the unaffiliated label Slut Smalls. As for label proprietor Karl O'Connor, AKA Regis, he contributes just a Substance version of the 1996 cut "Cold Water. Apparently, O'Connor prefers to spotlight fresh faces, such as OAKE and Kerridge, both of whom have made their Downwards debuts within the last year
Vital homegrown techno label Downwards turned 20 this year – and, unlike some imprints of a similar vintage, they’ve not made much of a fuss. The imprint, run by Sandwell District/British Murder Boys veteran Regis, has kept up a steady trickle of new releases, including Cut Hands’ hammering Madwoman EP and two 12″s of gunmetal techno from Berlin resident Samuel Kerridge. As Resident Advisor report, the the label will toast the anniversary with a new compilation, 20 Years Of Downwards, featuring material from a number of Downwards alumni and affiliates. Surgeon, trading under his birth name Anthony Child, will appear, and Napalm Death’s Mick Harris – something of a spiritual leader to the Midlands techno set – will contribute under his Fret alias.
