Bryars's later works have included A Man In A Room, Gambling (1992), which was written on commission from Artangel. Bryars's music is heard beneath monologues spoken by the Spanish artist Juan Muñoz, who talks about methods of cheating at card games. The ten short works were played on BBC Radio 3 without any introductory announcements, and Bryars has said that he hoped they would appear to the listener in a similar way to the shipping forecast, both mysterious and accepted without question. Cadman Requiem (dedicated to Bill Cadman, his sound recordist, who perished in Pan Am 103), 1989. String Quartet No. 2, 1990. A Man in a Room, Gambling, for speaking voice and string quartet (text: Juan Muñoz), 1992. The North Shore for viola and piano, 1993. Three Elegies for Nine Clarinets, 1994.

A Man in a Room, Gambling is a 1992 collaboration between Spanish sculptor Juan Muñoz and composer Gavin Bryars. Created as a series of ten, five-minute programs for broadcast on the BBC, A Man in a Room, Gambling aired, in accordance with Muñoz' concept, "like the weather forecast. Each five-minute "episode" features the foreground element of Muñoz reading a text describing how to perform subtle, unnoticeable card tricks during a poker game to put the edge in your favor. In the background, Bryars' lonely, black and white music, as played by the Balanescu String.

For 'A Man in a Room, Gambling', Muñoz wrote 10 texts, each one describing the manipulation of playing cards. Each lasts exactly 5 minutes and would ideally be placed before the last radio news of the evening so that the programme would be encountered, in Britain at least, like an encounter with the Shipping Forecast. Each is accompanied by a string quartet, playing at exactly the same tempo for each piece, giving an overall unifying texture to each five-minute piece and to the sequence of ten programmes. Five of the pieces were released on Point in 1997, in different orchestrations. He and Gavin Bryars had planned to resume their collaborations after their respective summers away - for this album and for a projected chamber opera.
